(CODY, WILLIAM F.)
A superb Cody-related letter by Capt. LUTHER H. NORTH (d. 1935), an American Indian fighter who, with his brother Frank, led the Pawnee Scouts against their traditional enemy, the Sioux. North's A.L.S. 4pp. 4to., Columbus, Neb., 1931, gives his eyewitness account of Cody's own exploits as an army scout. In part: "... hostile Indians, Cheyennes, made a dash to try and drive off the mule herd. They killed two of the herders and then started after the mules…I called to my men to get across the River…Buffalo Bill was camped above me on the River and happened to have his horse saddled…I soon overtook him…[he] said Capt. North your men have got me wrong they think I am wild Bill, because I have long hair…it was said that wild Bill Hickok was with the Cheyennes…one of my men [a Pawnee scout]…rode up alongside of him... the Indian reached over and grabbed the revolver out of Cody's holster and rode on after the Cheyennes...we managed to overtake and kill two of the Cheyennes…I told him to give Cody his revolver which he did - from that time on Cody and Pawnees became good friends…Cody was a poor shot with a revolver…". Much more, with the transmittal envelope, very good. Great insight on Cody's colorful life!
