Rosita Mining District. Incorporated in New York in 1882. No. 63 issued to The Farmers’ Loan & Trust Co., Trustee on 25 September for 8,000 shares by Aron [illegible], Secretary, and W. K. Smith, Vice President. Also countersigned by Wm. H. Leupp, Secretary of the Farmers Loan and Trust Co. on 28 September. U/C. Some wrinkling. Good condition. Silver was discovered in Rosita in 1875. For awhile it was the county seat but by the close of the 1880s, ore production had declined. The Pocahontas was the main mine in the area. Indian advocate and writer, Helen Hunt Jackson, a wealthy Colorado resident, visited the area in 1870 because of what she described as the beautiful wild roses of the area. She wrote “not even a millionaire of mines will ever dare to dispute the vested title of the modest little flower” [Ref: Holabird, Western Americana, Auction # 9, Volume 2: Colorado, p. 34, 2001]. At its height, Rosita had a population of 2,000. Such a wild west area, the town had many gunfights. Ore production "was thought to be $2-3 million, though none of the mines produced significant quantities of ore" [Ref: Holabird, Western Americana, Auction # 9, Volume 2: Colorado, p. 34, 2001].
