The Red Elephant group consisted of the Red Elephant, Boulder Nest, Free American, St. James, Tabor and White Mines. The camp of Red Elephant, located on Red Elephant Mt. one mile above Lawson, contained a post office, commissary, and several miners’ boarding houses and cabins. Peak population was about 300. The property has 5 shafts 230 to 700 ft. deep with 3 to 13 levels. The Commodore Tunnel is 3,460 ft. long. Average tenor of the ore was 250 oz. silver to the ton. Estimated production at 19th century prices was $1,500,000.00. The vignette is of miners working underground with pick axes and pneumatic drills. A few spots of foxing, otherwise in excellent condition.
