2. The Valley View Gold Mining Company. David Halliday Moffat (1839-1911), a Colorado businessman, and President of this gold mining company, came to Denver in 1860 and opened a book store with C.C. Woolworth. He was one of the largest mine operators in Colorado. He had numerous investments in mining properties with Jerome B. Chaffee and Horace Austin Tabor, including the Little Pittsburg Consolidated Mining Company at Leadville. Moffat was also involved in many railroad enterprises. Moffat long dreamed of building a railroad through the mountains from Denver to Salt Lake City.
