Joel Parker Whitney, president of both of these mining companies, is an interesting character in California history especially in the Sacramento and Placer county regions. Whitney came to the Gold Rush at the age of 17 from Boston. He made his millions in mining in Colorado, but he had huge ranches in the Rocklin, California area. Downing was manager of the ranch holdings. The land there was eventually sold off by descendents in the late 1900s [Day, "Who was Parker Whitney," no page].
