Lot of 2. 1. The Horse Shoe Gold & Silver Mining Company. Both of the mines in this group are located in a glacial cirque well above timberline and are situated about 12 miles west of Fairplay near the summit of the Mosquito Range. Among the best mines was the Sacramento, discovered in October 1878. Other mines were the Hill Top, Last Chance, Peerless, Maud, Stormy Petrel, Twinkle, and Little Star. The ore is similar to that of Leadville; primarily argentiferous cerussite and galena replacements in dolomite [Refs: The Hal Miller Files including Reports, Maps, Assays; “Report of the State Bureau of Mines,” Colorado, 1900-01; Hollister, The Mines of Colorado, 1867; Fosset, Colorado its Gold and Silver Mines, 1879]. Stock number 50 issued to Joseph G. Marriott by [illegible] Jeffrey, Secretary, and J. G. Marriott, President, on 10 May 1882. White paper with a black border, it has foxing on both front and back on the bottom of the stock. Ornate black border of a potted plant. Vignette is of the Colorado State seal with an eagle on one side and miners on the other. U/C. Fair condition.



2. The Stormy Petrel Mining and Milling Corporation. This mine was located in the same area as the Horse Shoe and its ore is identical to that of the Horse Shoe. Number 1328 issued to Katharine Tucke by Byron Tifft, Secretary, and G. F. Butchils, President on 7 January 1903. Signed on reverse by Tucke and witness Fannie S. Mansen, no date. Not cancelU/Ce of miners at work and at rest underground. On white paper with a black border. Each corner has the face of a joker in it. The border is yellowing and the folds are visible. Good condition.
