37 miles northwest of Leadville lies the ghost town of Holy Cross City. Today the abounded ruins are a popular site for jeep tours, but from 1881 to 1884, the town was home to nearly 300 people. During the town’s boom it had several buildings, hotel and even an assay office. The Gold Park Mining Co. quickly invested in the mountain town. Yet after only a few years, the mines could not produce enough to keep the companies out of debt, so the town was abandoned. This photograph appears to have been taken before the town was disserted. The photograph shows a mining mill on a winter’s day, with several miners sitting snow. The mill has the appearance of decay, with broken windows and missing pieces of the building structure. The photograph measures 7.25" x 5.10" and has some wear including marks and fading. HKA#62291
