Photo measures 7 3/8" x 4 1/4" mounted on dark green matte measuring 7 7/8" x 4 7/8". A view of Green Lake. Three small boats are seen floating on the lake. A man and woman are visible in one, two men are seen in another and the last boat is too far to tell. Bundles of trees are surrounding the lake. The photo was taken at the top of a small hill where piles of boulders and stones lie. "The W.H. Jackson Photo Co." caption on the matte. The reverse has an interesting design, centered is the W.H. Jackson Photograph and Publishing Co logo. "Railroad and Landscape Photography Our Specialties." Jackson was an active photographer in Colorado from 1879-97 [Mautz, 1997]. One of the most famous during the 19th century, he learned photography in New York in the Schoonmaker's studio and worked alongside Frank Mowry in Vermont as a retoucher. He opened the Jackson Brothers studio with his brother Edward in 1867 in Omaha. In 1879 Jackson opened a studio with Frank Smart in Denver, Colorado. Later, the W. H. Jackson Photography & Publishing Company was formed in 1883 [Mautz, 1997]. Photograph has good focus, medium contrast and minor yellowing along the top and bottom. Matte has very minor wear along the edges.
