Rare unissued sutler's scrip, good for one dollar in merchandise. Printed on bond paper, lithographed in red and blue ink without imprint. The condition of this piece is the finest of the three examples in the Ford Sale. The piece is Fine with very faint creasing. Fort Lyon went through four different names in about a decade. Originally the site of the infamous Bent brother’s trading post, the government changed the name to Fort Fauntleroy, then Fort Wise, and finally Fort Lyon to commemorate and honor the first officer killed in the Civil War. This is choice early western military scrip from a remote Indian trading post. John C. Fremont and Kit Carson, among a plethora of other western travelers, stopped at the fort while Bent was proprietor. From the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection.
