$20, copper gilt. NCS UNC details. Rarity 8. K4C. Planchet lines resulting in being called improperly cleaned. Extremely rare Thick Planchet (3mm) variety. This piece most likely is original gilt, by Bailey and Co. The Schoonmaker Stacks June 11, 1997 Coin listed as possibly unique appears to be gilt at a later date. Noticeably missing from Clifford, Kosoff and Garrett Auctions. “ In 1860 grocer turned banker, Clark, Gruber & Co., established a gold purchasing company and later a gold coining operation in Denver, CO. to cash in on the new gold rush. Milton Clark and Emanuel Gruber commissioned a Philadelphia jeweler to create a die emblematic of the area’s famous Pike’s Peak mountain. Unfortunately, having never been out West, the jeweler first created a $20 obverse die that looked like a pyramid. Specimens are known in copper and copper gilt, although none were made in gold.
