This company is a separate entity from the Gardner-Denver Drill Company. While the Gardner Governor Company was created in 1859 by Robert Gardner, it merged with the Denver Rock Drill Company in 1927, well after this firm here had been formed as a Colorado corporation. In 1902, The Colliery Engineer, Volume 22 reported the Gardner Electric Drill and Machinery Company produced an entirely electric rock drill using the newest of technology. The company was named after Frank Gardner, who, reported the book, was “probably the largest mine owner in the world” [The Colliery Engineer Company, 1902]. The electric drill was advertised to be more efficient, saving time and money for the operators and firms using the product. The drill bit was made out of steel and had cast iron gears. Gardner was a colorful character, who rose to wealth and prominence through mining, and in 1903 was living in Paris while three former wives sued him in Pennsylvania over the fact that he married one of them without being properly divorced from the other. He did not show up for the trial [New York Times, “A Matrimonial Tangle,” 29 December 1903]. No. 329 issued to Joseph Hibbert for 1,000 shares by Wm. Gelder, Secretary, and John McDonough, President, on 10 January. U/C. Excellent condition.
