Thomas Meade Bowen, the Secretary and Treasurer of this company, was born in Iowa on October 6, 1835. After coming West, he was made governor of the territory of Idaho. He left Idaho and set up a Law Office in Del Norte where he became active in mining. He was elected District Judge and held court in Del Norte, Saguache, Lake City, and Fairplay. He was run out of Fairplay by a lynch mob for making an unpopular deal with the district attorney to free a murderer by the name of Hoover, who was hung by the vigilantes from the second story window of the court house. In 1879 Judge Bowen made a lucky strike in the Little Annie and the Little Ida Mines at Summitville. He became very wealthy from the very rich gold ore in these mines. Judge Bowen became a U.S. Senator and after retiring he died in Pueblo, Colorado on December 30, 1907. In 1873 Peterson and Brandt made a rich discovery of free gold in quartz. In 1874 they transported sacks of ore by mules down to Del Norte; from there it went to Golden. One lot of four tons contained 104 oz. gold. Up till August of 1879 the lode (Little Annie) produced 18,750 oz. of gold [Ref: Fosset, Frank, Colorado its Gold and Silver Mines, 1879; The Hal Miller Files]. Number 141 issued to Charles F. Gillett by Thos. M. Bowen as Secretary and Treasurer and Chas. M. McKinley as President on 28 October 1875. Three signatures on reverse. Cancelled. White paper with a black border. Stained on the left side. Vignette of Columbia sprinkling coins around. Good condition.
