CO - Cart Plough & Ovens Stereoview :
Photograph of a Indian standing next to a "cart plough." In the right center are two ovens. Each half measures 3 1/2" X 3" on a cream matte measuring 4" X 7". Contrast is medium, while the focus is average plus. Sticker on the reverse side has printed Gurnsey's Rocky Mountain Views. Published at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Pike's Peak Avenue. Hand written is "202 Pueblo 'Indians' Cart Plough & Ovens." A plough is a tool used in farming for initial cultivation of soil in preparation for sowing seed or planting. American spelling is plow. The etymology of plough is Germanic, but shows up in later English as plough. The Latin version of the word means cart or wagon or cart box, which is what is pictured here. Photographer Byron, "Ben" Gurnsey, was active in Pueblo from 1872-75. He worked with Eugene Brandt in 1875 and in Colorado Springs, 1872-80 [Mautz, 1997].
