A rare view of this small Colorado town, this photo is identified as Sunshine, No. 184 in a series of Rocky Mountain Scenery, taken by L. P. Bass of Boulder, Colorado. There is a very faint hand penciled note on the reverse that is almost illegible except for a few words. The photo shows a dirt road winding through a tiny community of fewer than a dozen buildings. Pine trees dot the hillside. A horse and carriage are tied to a fence in the foreground. This community probably takes its name from and was support for the Sunshine Mine, which is in Garfield County. There, in September of 1897, the Sunshine Mine, Colorado Fuel & Iron Co., suffered an explosion of gas and dust ignited by a lamp, which killed twelve men [Ref: www.usmra.com/barrick/colorado.html]. 4 ½ x 7 ½.” The photo has spots and staining and is quite faded. Lawrence P. Bass and his wife Ida resided at 1921 Pine Street in Boulder around 1900. He was noted not only for being Chief of Police, but for being a photographer of some repute, particularly for his many portraits. His photo documentation of the “great flood” of 1894 in Boulder enhanced his reputation even further. The house is soon to be a local historic landmark, known as the Bell-Bass House. He died unexpectedly in 1920 [Ref: www.bouldercolorado.gov/files/4.6.11.1921_Pine_Memo.pdf].
