CLINGMAN, THOMAS L.
(1812 - 1897) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a brigade at the Wilderness and fought at Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor and in the Petersburg assaults. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., New York, Mar. 16, 1866 to a Mr. Tate, in part: "…I have made an arrangement for the Shuford Mine but not so good as I had hoped for when I saw you. This was due to the fact that the gold excitement was very dead when I came here, owing to large [?] in the Western Mines &c…I had no specimens and it was not certain that there was a vein there…they are to pay $10,000 in gold…This is the best I could do now. I hope they will carry it out…". Near fine.
