CLEVELAND, GROVER
(1837 - 1908) 22nd and 24th President of the United States, supported civil service and fiscal reform. Fine content A.L.S. "Grover Cleveland" 2pp. 8vo., Princeton, Oct. 27, 1906, to William Butler Duncan, in part: "...Mr. [Woodrow] Wilson is absent from home and I believe he is not expected here for some time -- that is not earlier than the middle of the coming week. He is only very lately returned from a trip abroad in search of health, and though he seems much better, care in the...physical and mental strength is still enforced on him. I mention this my way of giving you a hint of some difficulty in persuading him to accede to your request...". At the time of this letter, Wilson was President of Princeton University, a post he held until 1910. Cleveland was made a trustee of Princeton in 1902, and was active in that role until his death. Boldly written and very good.
