CLAY, HENRY
(1777 - 1852) American politician, the ""Great Pacificator"" who supported the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 which sought to avoid a civil war on the issue of states' rights and slavery. A.L.S. ""H. Clay"" 1p. 8vo., Washington, Mar. 26, 1850 to a Mr. Isaac Wharton concerning an honorary society membership for Clay who only months earlier had proposed the Compromise of 1850. In part: ""àI have received your official letter commending my appointment as an honorary member of the Knickerbocker Society of St. Paul CollegeàI thank you for the sentiments of personal regard and esteemàand especially for your highly appreciated approbation of my efforts to heel existing differences, between the several parts of one Union, and to restore concord and harmonyà"". A great link between an admiring public and Clay for his efforts to advert civil war. Very good.
