<b>562. CASSIUS M. CLAY </b>(1810 - 1903) Union major general who refused to serve because emancipation had not been declared at the beginning of the war. He served as minister to Russia from Lincoln's until Grant's administration. Signature and sentiment on a small slip, in full: "<i>March 10, 1876, Truly C. M. Clay to Miss M. L. Day</i>". His blind-embossed seal appears at top right. Slight loss at right from dismounting, not affecting signature, otherwise good. Along with a Confederate cover measuring 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" (unused), showing "<i>Secession Devouring Its Children</i>", with a Taxman at left extorting funds from a Planter, who offers "<i>his last slave</i>".
