CLARENCE S DARROW (1857-1938) American lawyer; defended John Thomas Scopes in the famous "Monkey" trial. ALS, "C S Darrow", 1 1/3pp, Oct 9 (1906), 8vo, The New Willard letterhead, Washington, DC, to Wourms. "...I am here to argue the Habeus Corpus case which is supposed to come up today. Please keep me posted about prospects of other cases - by wire if necessary, & won't you speak to the woman who runs your building & have her rent me a good room. Mrs D will be with me..." At the time of this letter Darrow was involved in one of the most celebrated criminal trials of the time. He represented William Hayward, the radical union leader from the Western Federation of Miners, who was accused of ordering the assassination of former Idaho Governor Frank Steunberg. For 2 days after writing this letter, Oct 10th & 11th, Darrow would argue before the U.S. Supreme Court that William Hayward and two other defendents, had been illegally brought to Idaho to face these charges. On Dec 3, 1906, the Supreme Court ruled that the arrest and forcible removal of the union leaders did not violate their constitutional rights. John Wourms, was an Idaho lawyer, who assisted Darrow with the defense. Some offsetting of ink to first page. Minor foxing, o/w VG. $1,250-1,750
