She took up painting in 1943, at the age of sixty eight. While taking classes at the Dallas Museum of Art she came to the attention of Jerry Bywaters, who encouraged her to paint in her naive manner instead of trying to learn a different style. By 1945, she was winning local competitions, and in 1946 she exhibited a painting at the National Academy of Design. She painted her memories of people, places, and events in Iredell, as well as Waxahachie, and Dallas. Her work is in the collections of the Amon Carter Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Wichita Art Museum. She exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art, Elizabet Ney Museum, Amon Carter Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Terry Art Institute, University of Illinois, Smithsonian Institution, Baltimore Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Philbrook Museum, and Southern Methodist University.
