CLARA BARTON
(1821 - 1912) American nurse who tended the wounded in the Civil War and later founded the American Red Cross.A great signed item, Barton's Report of Red Cross Hospital at National Drill and Encampment, 20pp. 8vo., (Washington: Rufus H. Darby), 1887. Front cover bold signed at top: "With sincere regards of Clara Barton". Fine. From May 23-30, 1887 Civil War veterans from around the country gathered at Camp George Washington, near Washington, D.C. to parade, attend speeches, and meet old comrades (and enemies). Barton set up field hospitals to tend to any injured or sick veterans who at the time would be at least in their mid-forties. The report describes the preparation for the encampment, and shows that 186 men were treated, 44 for sunstroke, and 306 prescriptions were prepared. Sold with a medal given to those who attended the event.
