CIVIL WAR SWORD OF MARCUS MOORE, 1ST MASS CAVALRY. A fine, German import, with Solingen marked blade, acid etched with "U.S." and martial motifs, total length 40." Two-branched brass guard with floral motifs, leather, wire-wrapped grip. Pommel cap engraved "Capt M A Moore." Scabbard polished steel with acid etched martial motifs, with brass mounts, and is engraved just below the throat "Captain Marcus A. Moore 1st Reg. Mass. Cav." The 1st Mass was composed primarily of militia organizations in the Boston area. Moore joined the regiment on September 17, 1861 for three years service, enlisting as a Captain in Co. M. By January the unit was in South Carolina, taking part in the Charleston expedition and other actions. Moore was mustered out in January 1863 for medical reasons.
