CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION-GRADE SWORD .
CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION-GRADE SWORD . Fine presentation-grade cavalry sabre, the blade probably German, with the remaining trappings assembled in the United States by Schuyler, Hartley and Graham or a similar firm. The hilt of the sabre is of coin silver, with the grip composed of vertical plain and floral decorated roping; the pommel cap is a fine, relief-cast portrait of Lady Liberty. The three-branched guard is decorated with relief casting of acorns and oak leaves, with a large bouquet of magnolia (?) blossoms. The 35" blade has a 3/4 length fuller, and is acid etched on one side with "U.S. Cavalry" and on the other with a spread-winged eagle holding a ribbon in its beak with "E Pluribus Unum." Total length of sword and grip, 41." The scabbard is brass, and was at one time silver-plated. The mounts are relief cast brass, of with the carrying rings held in place by two high-relief portraits of a woman's head topped by a wreath of acorns and oak leaves; the drag features a spread-winged eagle amidst various geometric motifs. A very fine sword, consigned to us from Newburg, Indiana, but unfortunately, without further provenance. Traces of original gilding still present in the guard, most of silver lost from scabbard; blade is gray, with very scattered and minor pitting on edge.
