CIVIL WAR HENRY RIFLE.
Cal. 44. S# 4723. Standard configuration of the 4th variation which includes rifles between serial number 3000-5000, and includes all the DC cavalry martials which run ~3000 to 4000. Large font barrel address with all serif letters transitions about S# 3500. About 500 commercial guns were made in the serial range that would make it to the field for rounded 1st type butt plate with large trap door but with the smaller .65" diameter bored mortise for the iron cleaning rods which take less space, starting after martials at about S# 4000. Butt plates will change to 2nd type with pointed edge and smaller trap door for the smaller iron rods. 900yd rear sight has stop screw for slide which transitioned after S# 4000 also. Sling swivels on left side. Serial number stamped on following parts: barrel behind rear sight dovetail, left side of lower receiver tang, top receiver tang channel in butt stock, inside bottom edge of butt plate, the three tang screws are unnumbered and buttplate screws unnumbered, which is not the norm. Regardless, rifle appears original and complete from its time of use.CONDITION: good-very good overall, good markings, barrel has mottled plum/gray patina. Brass has toned patina, stock refinished and varnished, mechanics functional, worn dark rifled bore front sight trimmed. Accompanying leather slang with brass buckle is broken but complete. (01-26378/JS). ANTIQUE. $9,000-14,000.
