The Special Field Order No 67, September 4, 1863 "In the Field Near Atlanta" announces the immediate evacuation of the city save for Union military personnel, and further instructing the Chief Quartermaster to appropriate all buildings and staples, and ominously, instructs the Chief Engineer to appropriate buildings useful to the occupying Army and mark for destruction any buildings that stand in his way. Orders are given that troops may not occupy any home, but are permitted to use boards and other similar materials to construct shelters. Issued by W.T. Sherman and signed in type by his ADC L.M. Dayton.The second, issued on September 6, from Thomas' headquarters prints text of congratulatory letters from Lincoln, and Grant, along with a message from Sherman noting that all Corps, Regiments, etc. can inscribe "Altanta" on their colors.
