CIVIL WAR ERA MODEL 1860 AMES M1860 STAFF
OFFICER’S SWORD OF MAJOR GENERAL NATHANIEL P. BANKS. This sword is accompanied by affidavit from family descendant stating this sword was his. Another sword of his sold from same estate in 2009 for over $50,000.00 presented to Banks in 1864. There are no photographs of Banks wearing a Model 1860, but this style appears wartime w/ tortoiseshell grip, diamond shape blade marked “AMES MFG Co / CHICOPEE / MASS” this is the same mark that occurs on wartime swords. Scabbard has unusual sword mounts w/ Greco-Roman motifs. Accompanying sword is a lg. framed oval 1856 dated engraving of Banks when member of U.S. House of Representatives (16x13"). There is also a unique cabinet card of General Banks as an old man showing off that he could still fit in his Civil War uniform, he is holding the presentation sword previously mentioned. CONDITION: sword is good to very good overall. Blade is gray w/ scattered areas of staining w/ sm. nicks in cutting edge. Hilt is missing push button for folding languet. Scabbard body has iron patina w/ pitting. Brass ring mounts are well worn w/ gold plate in protected areas, overall chocolate brown. Cabinet card is very good & retains a contemporary frame. Engraving has water staining around edges as well as being remounted in apparently original frame. (02-14982/JS). $2,000-3,000.
