CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE COLLEGE HILL ARSENAL CAVALRY
OFFICERS SABER. Overall length: 42 5/8”. Blade length: 34 1/2". This fine example of a College Hill Arsenal produced Confederate cavalry officer’s sword is one of the classics of all Confederate sabers. The arsenal was owned and run by L. T. Cunningham of Nashville, Tennessee & produced several types of swords. This example closely resembles the Nashville Plow Works saber in design. Unlike the Plow Works design, the College Hill saber has a large block letter “C S A” on the underside of the guard & an iron back strap instead of brass. Plain blade w/ a single unstopped fuller. Crudely cast brass guard & knuckle bow featuring a block “C S A” on the underside of the guard. Five branch guard joins the knuckle bow at the midpoint becoming a single branch before entering the pommel. Iron back strap/pommel cap w/ an iron capstan rivet. Brass wire wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard w/ brass scabbard rings & iron suspension rings. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, somewhat mottled patina w/ spotty areas of light oxidation particularly near the tip. Guard & knuckle bow have a deep mustard patina w/ sharp details giving the crude casting technique. Back strap/pommel has a dark chocolate patina. Grip leather is about 90%. Wire is complete. Scabbard has a dark overall chocolate patina w/ a few scattered, shallow dents. Brass scabbard rings have a mellow, mustard patina. A fine example of a scarce Tennessee manufactured Confederate saber. (02-14719/BF). $16,000-20,000.
