CIVIL WAR ALS FROM MAJOR GENERAL HENRY W. HALLECK.
Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, dated April 22, 1862, to Major General John Pope. 1 page, front and back. Imperfections.

A West Point graduate, Halleck (1815-1872) was an astute military scholar and administrative officer, but was somewhat lackluster as a field officer. He spent the early part of the war in the western theater, during which time he oversaw the actions of his future commander, General Ulysses S. Grant. Following the bloodbath at Shiloh in April of 1862, Halleck took over operations, culminating in the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi. The present letter represents Halleck's orders for General Pope as the the Armies of the Tennessee, the Ohio, and the Mississippi manuvered against Confederate forces at Corinth. While Halleck was effective at capturing the important railroad town, his campaign was considered tedious and ineffective, especially given the talented Union officers present. Shortly thereafter, Lincoln called Halleck to Washingto to assume the position of General-in-Chief of the Union armies, a post which he held until Grant took command in 1864.
