CITY LIGHTS

One Sheet (28" x 41"); Style No. 2, Stone Litho
Fine+ on Linen
United Artists, 1931

Two styles of one-sheets were created for this remarkable film. This version depicts Chaplin as he engages in a boxing match, in which he is greatly outmatched.

This exceptionally rare poster has undergone professional restoration and has been mounted on linen. The main issues, consisting of small chips and tears, were located in the borders. A larger, clean tear was present in the upper blue field above the name 'Chaplin'. The central image remains in superb condition, featuring vibrant colors and exquisite stone lithography. It is thought to be one of just two known copies in existence.

"City Lights," an American silent romantic-comedy film released in 1931, is often hailed as Charlie Chaplin's finest cinematic work. The film narrates the tale of the Tramp, portrayed by Chaplin, who forms a friendship with a destitute blind girl, played by Virginia Cherrill. He leads her to believe he is a man of wealth. Through his selfless acts, she eventually undergoes an operation that restores her sight. However, by this time, the Tramp, prone to misfortune, finds himself incarcerated. The iconic final scene, where the Tramp visits her flower shop and she slowly recognizes him as her benefactor, is celebrated as one of the most poignant moments in the history of film.
