Waller, 1742FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION, pages (8), (iii) - xxxiii, (1, blank), 400, (30), (2, adverts), 8vo, contemporary panelled calf : a little rubbed and worn, lacking the spine label and with some very light browning of the text in places, otherwise a very good or better copy with the armorial bookplate of George Cockburn.In this copy the leaf preceding the title-page is an advert leaf for Guthrie's 2 vol translation of the Orations and not a half-title proper as in the BL copy. Guthrie (1708-70), prolific writer on history and geography and unscrupulous political writer, was more than once referred to by Johnson in terms of some respect.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) POMEY ( François Antoine ), SJ.
