King of Denmark and Norway (1766-1808) though the country was ruled by his son, the future Frederick VI, as regent after 1784. DS in Danish, 2pp on single leaf, small folio, [Denmark], Dec 10, 1772. Untranslated. Paper seal present. Boldly signed on second page above a mounted portrait of the youthful King. Elaborately lettered and attractive. Light general toning; small paper loss at top edge; o/w VG. Shortly after his accession, Christian’s increasing mental illness made him dependent on his German physician, Johann Friedrich Struensée, who gradually became an all-powerful minister. Later tried and beheaded, the kingdom was then ruled by the conspirators, Christian’s stepmother, half-brother and his tutor, until Frederick became regent.
