A CHINESE CARVED GILT WOOD CIRCULAR DRAGON WINDOW
A beautiful reticulated round partially-gilt wood window, carved throughout in full-relief with a dragon staring straight forward and two other dragons flanking and facing it, all three of which are shown flying through clouds. Dragons are symbolic of divine force and great strength and wisdom. Below the dragons are two fish amid waves on either side of a pagoda or temple. The fish in Chinese art has several meanings. It is the emblem of wealth and abundance. Due to its reproductive powers, it is a symbol of regeneration, and since it is thought to be happy in its own realm, it has come to be symbolic of harmony and connubial bliss. The fish also signifies freedom from all restraints, because in the water a fish moves easily in any direction. In the Buddha-state the fully-emancipated being knows no restraints or obstruction.
This piece can actually be used as a window, as it was in China, or as a spectacular wall piece. The patina is a matte reddish-brown pigment with partial gilding and some polychrome (such as the dragon's tongue). It is 20" in diameter, and about 3.5" deep at its thickest point. It is in excellent condition considering its age. It is unusual in the number of dragons and the quality of the carving. More photos are available.
