CHINA-YUNNAN ND(1911-15) 50 Cents Copper Trial Pattern, Kann 170x, XF. The Yunnan dragon coinage without English inscriptions (Y255-258; Kann 169-174) is a very complex series. Not only are there many varieties, some of which are not listed in the Kann catalog, there are also varieties of the copper and brass patterns for this series. Though Kann dated this series to 1908 and they are indeed inscribed with the name of the Emperor Kuang Hsu, who died that year, they were probably first struck in 1911 or 1912 and were certainly made into Republican times, as late as 1930, and again in 1949. The copper pattern 50 Cent coin offered here is the variety with two loops below the fireball (with no dots inside) and with a dot in the center ring only of the rosettes on the Chinese side but no dots in the rosettes on the dragon side.
