CHINA ND(1880-1912) (Hu Pu) Ch'ien Feng Kuan Hao (Ch'ien Feng Official Bank), Pick unlisted, F
Issued by a commercial bank with government connections, as shown by the words"Hu Pu"above the title of the bank in the lower left chop. This bank was probably in operation in the 1850's and 1860's, but this type of note was used in the 1880-1912 period. Of the hundreds of banks which issued this kind of note, most were located in the Peking area. This note is actually not printed at all, but is partly handwritten and partly stamped with seals. Ward Smith, author of Chinese Banknotes, was working on a book on these block printed notes when he died. He recorded notes from hundreds of these banks, many of which were in his collection. Some of the notes have the address of the bank in Peking. When Ward Smith lived in Peking (1946-1949) he went to those addresses looking for the old banks. He didn't find any in operation, but he probably found many of the notes during those trips. These notes with the Hu Pu (Hupoo) designation are rare.
