(CHINA) ANTI-JAPANESE ORIGINAL POSTER ART
Original ink and ink wash poster by noted Philadelphia newspaper political artist GILBERT ALLAN GEIST (1895-1937), 25 ?" x 14 ?" (sight), ca. 1917, a rather sinister image of a Japanese soldier, his eyes hidden. Chagrining through a thoroughly-destroyed and smoldering city as a Japanese "rising sun" silhouettes graveyard crosses in the background. Dated "1917" on verso with a note that the image would be used for a poster. Signed at bottom right, fine, in a somewhat broken frame. Although the Japanese were ostensibly sided with the Allies during World War I, they took advantage of their strength and position to occupy a good part of mainland China.
