CHINA: 20 cents script, 1933, 111x85mm, for use in the Jai-alai Auditorium at 35-37Avenue Edouard Seventh, issued 1 January, 1933, Very Good, R. The Jai-alai (hai alai in Chinese) Auditorium was active from 1930-1944 in Shanghai. In 1934, the auditorium was renovated and expanded to seat more than 3,000 people, 4,000 employees and installed air-conditioning, heating and a circular bar. It became infused in popular culture, listed as a must-do in guidebooks of the period, and even featured in a novel. In the early 1990's, the building was pulled down and a new shopping mall was erected in its place. Photo size reduced.
