Currency:USD Category:Collectibles Start Price:1,000.00 USD Estimated At:2,000.00 - 3,000.00 USD
CHILD'S SLAVE COLLAR
Extremely rare hand-forged slave collar, ca. 1840’s, approximately 18” in length and likely used on a child on a plantation. The collar is composed of two strands of approx. 1/4" links on either side of a 2 3/8" scallop-edged plate with brass insert upon which the slave's name O. Y. Peter" has been engraved in period lettering. A hasp with lock is present into which fits a sleeve found at the other end of the collar. That sleeve bears five holes through which a round locking pin would fit. A key is present which operates a screw-type locking pin, still operable. The length of this collar indicates it was likely used on a teenage or larger child. Although various shackles and collars for adult slaves are commonly seen, those used on children are seldom offered. From a private collection emanating from Beaufort, SC.

Estimate: $2,000 - 3,000.
