CHESTER A ARTHUR (1830-86) President. ALS, "C A Arthur", 2pp, Mar 23 (1880), 5"X5 1/2", to the noted statesman Edwards Pierrepont (1817-92), who had served President Ulysses S Grant as Attorney General (1875-76), interesting content as the Republican National Convention was approaching. "...I have engaged rooms at the Grand Central Hotel at Chicago, for all the New York delegation, so I think you will be well provided for..." At the 1880 Republican Convention in Chicago, James Garfield was nominated for the Presidency, on the 35th ballot. Chester Arthur was chosen as his running mate, primarily as a means of pacifying those who wanted Ulysses S Grant to run for a third term. The Garfield/Arthur team defeated the Democratic nominess Winfield Scott Hancock & William English. Less than a year after the election Arthur assumed the Presidency, following the assassination of Garfield. Light soiling to first page, o/w VG. $800-1,200
