<p>William Jasper (ca. 1750-1779) was a Georgia native who served as a sargeant with the Second South Carolina Regiment. When the regimental flag (blue with a white crescent) was shot down on Sullivans Island, he left the fort to retrieve it. Fully exposed to British fire, he recovered the flag and climbed the wall back into the fort. His bravery rallied the American troops
and the battle was won.
