177. [CHARLESTON MOB]

“get hold of a few of the leaders...and hang them”
Ohio Congressman Timothy C. Day (1819-1869) writes to Francis Spinner, at the time US Congressman from NY regarding the volatile political situation just prior to the Civil War. Superb ALS, 3pp, 4to, Cincinnati, Jan 11, 1861. Excellent content. In part, “...Before this may reach you it is possible that we shall have reached the crisis of the Charleston mob. I use this term, for I am well satisfied that not a fourth of the people of S. Carolina desire the present posture of their state. We expect to hear to day of the entrance of the Brooklyn into Charleston harbor, and of her being fired into, and the consequent bombardment of Ft. Moultrie...One thing is certain, Major Anderson must be relieved if it costs civil war...My plan would be to blockade the ports of every seceding state...The mob talk about declaring for free trade and thus appealing to the interests of foreign power to open their ports...Foreign governments understand where their market is in this country...by closing their ports their whole business will have to pass through the north by railroad, thus adding to the cost of transportation and the lessening of the price of cotton...the result would be a civil war in the south, or a surrender. On the other hand, if we let the north loose on the south, slavery is doomed, and we should have to contemplate a St. Domingo...we must not forget that a majority...of the south are now living under a reign of terror...If we could get hold of a few of the leaders...and hang them, the example would be salutary...” Fine example.
