CHARLES LEE: (1731 - 1782) American Revolution second-ranking major general, taken prisoner and thereafter secretly conspired with Howe to defeat the Americans. He was later exchanged and while engaged at Monmouth his retreat nearly cost the battle. Dismissed in 1780. Outstanding, important and rare war-date A.L.S. "C. Lee", 2pp. large 8vo., New York, Feb. 20, [1776], to fellow General Philip Schuyler, written just before Lee succeeded Schuyler in the command of the Northern Department. I part: "...I have inclos'd to you a letter to General Worcester [David Wooster] informing of my appointment - I have order'd the Commanding Officer of Crown Point to send down to Sorel [Canada] a certain number of Cannon of which inclos'd is a list, but as they cannot be transported without your assistance from Albany I must request therefore that you will apply to the Committee there for horses and the necessary carriages for their transportation. You are a much better judge than I can possibly be of the nature of these carriages, whether they should be slays [sleds] or what they should be - I shall see you in a very few days, have much to say to you on the subject of N. York..." Lee no doubt had in mind the intention of the British to take New York, following their capture of Boston, and sought artillery reinforcement from the Ticonderoga region. Fine condition. $2,500-3,500
