CHARLES CARROLL, SIGNER DS. Partially printed DS by "Charles Carroll of Carrollton," being a bank draft dated April 12, 1821, Baltimore. A few ink smears, cancellation "X's" cut into check, corner folded, else in very good condition. Carroll (1737-1832) is sometimes referred to as the "first citizen," and has a number of "firsts" (and "lasts") to his credit. He became the first Roman Catholic to hold office in MD in over a century, member of the 1st MD Senate, and one of MD's 2 US Senators. He was not initially a delegate to the Continental Congress because he was a Roman Catholic, but was there as observer & adviser. He succeeded in getting the delegate restrictions lifted and became an official delegate on July 4, 1776, and signed the Declaration in August. He was the last surviving signer, outliving Adams and Jefferson by 6 more years. PLEASE NOTE: THIS LOT WILL BE SOLD ON EBAY LIVE AUCTIONS BETWEEN 5:00-6:00pm EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME ON MAY 10, 2002.
