CHARLES BOWLING (1891-1995)
Storm Lit Hills
Lithograph on paper
9-1/2 x 13 inches (24.1 x 33.0 cm)
Signed lower right
Titled lower left

This prize-winning print is quite a technical achievement for a lithograph. Normally stone lithographs are ill suited for displaying different levels of grayscale. Bowling is able to push his medium to at least six or seven levels of gray without the cross-hatching technique normally used by lithographers. In addition, Bowling uses a needle on the stone to "scratch in" details like the tips of tree limbs, details in the foreground grass, and the peaks of the dominant hills. This technique of scratching details in the stone is rarely used because it then requires repolishing of the stone's surface before reuse.

This beautiful and technically accomplished print comes directly from the artist's collection.

Provenance:
Charles Bowling
Frances Layne (daughter)
Pat Layne (grandson)

Exhibited:
Dallas Museum of Art, Lawrence Barrett Purchase Prize, Second Annual Texas Print Exhibition, 1942Condition Report: Excellent condition.
