CHARLES BOWLING (1891-1995)
Industrial Encroachment, 1939
Lithograph on paper
10 x 12 inches (25.4 x 30.5 cm)
Signed lower right
Titled lower left

This prize-winning lithograph depicts Dallas' Little Mexico neighborhood. The artist contrasts decrepit shacks in the foreground with modern industrial plants in the background. One gets the feeling that the shanties have little hope of surviving Dallas' coming industrialization.

The lithograph now seems a bit prophetic. Whittled down over many years to industrial and downtown development, the remaining vestiges of the Little Mexico neighborhood are now threatened by the Uptown and Victory Park areas. This lithograph is a superb technical achievement with its rich tonalities from black through light grays. The print has a small edition size (Ed. 15) and this example is in excellent condition.

Provenance:
Charles Bowling
Frances Layne (daughter)
Pat Layne (grandson)

Exhibited:
Dallas Museum of Art, Sanger Brothers Prize, Tenth Annual Dallas Allied Arts ExhibitionCondition Report: Excellent condition.
