A single-sheet summons to the Sheriff of the County of New London, for John Brooks(?) of Saybrook, to appear before John Tully, one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace, dated November 1745 (1795?). Caleb Chapman is referenced. Signed Ged-- Chapman Just of peace. 7in. x 6in. Condition: Three vertical and two horizontal folds; toned; dampstains at folds; small edge tears/folds. 2. A single-sheet summons slip/receipt to Allen Leet, commanding him: "...to appear before James Wadsworth at Durham to give Give Evidence of what you know in case to be heard and tryd between Joel Canfield plt(?) and Ged(---?) waterhous...," to be heard before John Tully; signed Ged-- Chapman Just of peace. On the reverse signed by Joel Canfield, attesting to having read the summons "in his hearing By me," dated July 22d, 1755(?). 3in. x 8in. Condition: At least three vertical folds; dark toning along bottom margin; edge tears and folds. This lot and the other Chapman-related items offered in this sale were part of a collection of papers and ephemera related to the family of Edward Mortimer Chapman (1862-1952), a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author, and a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635).
