Eighteen years after leaving Burma, Chan Chao returned to his native country to make portraits of people living with the effects of the widespread military junta and extreme human rights violations. Chao chose to capture his subjects in the context of simple pleasures of family, work and relaxation, lending a tender quality to a people who are faced with seemingly insurmountable political turmoil.
