(1828 - 1914) Union brigadier general of the 20th Maine whose valiant defense of Little Round Top prevented the Confederates from turning the line at Gettysburg. Chamberlain was also present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Excessively rare document signed by both Joshua Chamberlain and his brother Thomas Chamberlain, 1p. 7" x 2 3/4", a checked made out and signed "Joshua L. Chamberlain", dated Boston, Oct. 12, 1870 making a $100 payment to "T. D. Chamberlain". On the verso, Thomas endorses the check "For Deposit T. D. Chamberlain". Ink and punch cancels clear of both signatures. THOMAS D. CHAMBERLAIN (1841-1896) served under his brother and fought at his side as the 20th Maine defended Little Round Top on the first day at Gettysburg.
