CH & S of New York Northwest Trade percussion gun, .60 cal., 31” barrel, likely period shortened, full length wood stock, tacked butt stock, large trigger guard, brass dragon side plate, two rawhide bands around forestock that are sinew sewn but may not be very old. This gun is in overall good condition showing a dark patina on metal surfaces, an old repair to the hammer, working action, overall worn but good wood with an old loss at the top of the lockplate and several cracks along the edges of the fore stock; brass butt plate missing lower third. Cronin Herxthal and Sears made this type of gun circa 1855. Previously in the famous Ernie Cowles collection and pictured and described on pages 58 and 59 of “The Nortwest Indian Trade Gun Collection of Ernie Cowles” by Paul Fridlund, a copy of which is included with this lot.
