CEYLON: AR larin (4.83g), ND (1506-1658), "fish-hook" type with barbarous Arabic inscriptions, testmark, VF, ex Wéiduolìya Collection, ex Baldwins Auction 53, Lot 1130. The larin, also known as "koku ridi", was in use in Kandy from the 17th to the early part of the 19th century. They were made by private parties, five of which went to a piece-of-eight, or a Spanish Dollar. These coins, with a shape like a fish-hook, bear either no legend, or at best poor imitations of Arabic letters; they are usually somewhat thick and short, frequently showing one or more cuts at the bend, apparently made to test the purity of the metal.
