Morgan Smith became Colonel of the 8th Missouri Infantry before taking over a brigade during the reduction of Ft. Donelson and leading it at Shiloh where it was nearly destroyed. Promoted to Brigadier General on July 16,1862, Smith was severely wounded at Chickasaw Bluffs and remained incapacitated for over a year. He retuned to command a division in the 14th Corps at Chattanooga and Atlanta, temporarily leading the Corps when McPherson was killed, but the cumulative effects of his old wounds forced him to request relief and he ended the war in charge of the District of Vicksburg. Smith ultimately resigned from service and held several political appointments after the war, dying in 1874.<p>Trimmed at top and bottom with several pinholes along the sides, else GOOD
